Snail Farming Business

Snail farming is the process of breeding or rearing snails either for commercial purpose or personal consumption. 

Snail farming usually begins with the rearing of snail hatchlings, juveniles, managing them until they attain maturity which usually takes about 7 – 12 months before disposal in the market place. 

Snail farming is a very lucrative venture and snail meat is a delicacy relished by many in our society today.

This area of agribusiness is still untapped and for those who have invested their time and money in the business over time confirms that it is a money spinner but yet to be discovered and exploited by many.

Snail farming requires small capital to set up and it can be ventured into as a full-time or part-time business. Snail farming takes about 7 – 12 months to cultivate to enable them mature before getting them into the market for sales to the consuming public.

It also has some health and economic benefits. Snail farming have a huge export potential to snail consuming countries like America, Italy, France, Germany, Britain, China and other West Africa Countries.

As at the time of writing this blog, a mature snail sells between N250 – N400 depending on the size and specie. Snail meat is a major ingredient and delicacy in high forest areas. They are mostly transported to urban areas where their demand and consumption is on the increase.

Snail farming is indeed another means of ensuring food security and employment in a country like Nigeria especially now that youths are taking to agriculture.

Here are a few characteristics about snails you need to know:
-          Snails are hermaphrodites i.e. they possess both male and female sexual organs.
-          They are nocturnal creatures meaning that they are more active at night.
-          They are a good source of protein.
-          Snails can live for about 5 – 8 years. A great life cycle for such a small pet – right?
